US Open Women saw only one retirement and it was in the lopsided match between Serena Williams and Vitalia Diatchenko.
The Russian player did not stand a chance today, and her foot injury made things worse. Williams won 32 points to just five by the Russian and after 30 minutes the score of 6-0 2-0 was on the board. Diatchenko threw in the towel and this point and Williams quickly moves on to the second round.
This was the only Women’s retirement on opening day after the Men’s schedule witnessed 6 in match retirements on the first day of play (Record Men’s First Day Retirements).
The total of 7 retirements on Day 1 of the US Open, all came after completion of the first set and match betting will be void or stand, all depending on chosen bookmaker.
